What is freeze authority on Solana?

Freeze authority is the power to freeze someone else's token account. It is a normal part of the Solana token standard, it is used legitimately by stablecoins — and it is also the single most common mechanism behind honeypot scams.

What it actually does

When a token is created on Solana, the creator can assign two special powers: a mint authority (the ability to create more supply) and a freeze authority (the ability to freeze any holder's token account).

A frozen account cannot transfer its tokens. Not to a DEX, not to another wallet, not anywhere. The balance still shows in your wallet, the chart still moves — you simply cannot act on it. Both powers can be permanently given up, which is called renouncing.

Why scammers keep it

It creates a perfect trap. Buys work normally, so the token looks healthy and the price climbs as people pile in. When holders try to take profit, their sells fail — often with Account is frozen. The scammer is the only one who can still sell.

There is no recovery. Once your account is frozen, no amount of slippage, no other DEX and no support ticket will get you out. The check must happen before you buy.

But USDC has one — so it is not always bad

This is the nuance most rug checkers get wrong. USDC keeps an active freeze authority, and so do most regulated stablecoins. Circle needs it to comply with sanctions and court orders — it is a legal requirement, not an attack.

So the signal is contextual. An active freeze authority on an established, verified token with a known issuer is expected. The same flag on a three-hour-old memecoin from an anonymous deployer is a red alert. Judge it together with who issued the token.

How to check it yourself

Freeze authority is public on-chain data — anyone can read it, and it cannot be faked. You can look at the mint account on a block explorer, or paste the address into a checker that reads it for you along with mint authority, liquidity lock and holder concentration.

What you want to see on a memecoin: freeze authority renounced, mint authority disabled, and liquidity locked or burned.
